Fifty-two Maine lighthouses will be open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 12, as part of the first Open Lighthouse Day.
The event is designed to attract visitors to the state’s lighthouses and raise public awareness of Maine’s maritime heritage.
Gov. John Baldacci, representatives of the Coast Guard and state tourism officials will announce details of the day at a press conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth.
U.S. Lighthouse Service artifacts will be on display and a retired lighthouse keeper will attend the press conference.
